Romania inaugurates its presidency of the Council of the European Union
On Friday, January 10 2019, Romania officially launched its first-ever presidency of the Council of the European Union. The event was celebrated through a concert of classical music hosted by the Romanian Athenaeum.
The heads of the European Parliament, European Council and the European Commission, together with the entire college of Commissioners, joined Romanian leaders in an event that celebrated the journey made by Romania throughout the past three decades of its history, from the margins to the very heart of the European construction.
The event was also attended by leaders of the main religious cults in the country. The Romanian Orthodox Church was represented by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, accompanied by His Eminence Metropolitan Nifon, the President of the Representation of the Romanian Orthodox Church to the European Institution.
Amongst the priorities of the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU are achieving greater convergence within Europe, enhancing internal and external security of European citizens, augmenting its position as a key global factor, and promoting the common European values.
The Romanian Presidency will have to deal with with important and demanding matters, such as the Brexit process, the EU summit for the future of Europe, which will take place in Sibiu, Romania, on Europe’s Day (May 9, 2019), as well as the election for the European Parliament.
