Assembly of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church

On February 15, 2018, the members of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church gathered together for its first annual meeting. The event took place at the Patriarchal Residence in Bucharest, under the chairmanship of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel. In his opening speech, the Romanian Patriarch presented the agenda of the meeting: the election of an Assistant Bishop for the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Italy, the election of an Assistant Bishop for the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Spain and Portugal, as well as the approval of several akathist hymns dedicated to a number of Romanian Saints who have been canonized over the past years. In the context of the centenary of the Great Union, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Romanian State, His Beatitude emphasized both the relevance of the event and the importance of honoring the memory of those who sacrificed their own lives for the reunification of the Romanian nation.

The Holy Synod is the highest authority of the Romanian Orthodox Church. It is made up of the hierarchs in function: the Patriarch, Metropolitans, Archbishops, Bishops and Vicar Bishops. The Holy Synod meets annually in at least two working sessions, in Spring and Autumn, and in extraordinary sessions whenever needed.
