First European Education Summit in Brussels
On 25 January 2018, the first European Education Summit opened its doors in Brussels under the theme: Laying the Foundations of the European Education Area: For an Innovative, Inclusive and Values-based Education. Hosted by Tibor Navracsics, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, the event brought together ministers, academics, stakeholders, and civil society, in order to focus on the low achievement in basic skills of young people across Europe, as well as on the urgent need to address inequalities in education systems and better investment in education.
Education has a key role in each and every country. All children and young people should have the chance to fulfill studies and positively contribute to nowadays society. In this regard, on 17 March 2015, at the informal meeting of Education Ministers in Paris, the Declaration on promoting citizenship and the common values of freedom, tolerance and non-discrimination through education was adopted. Guided by the Commission’s Communication Strengthening European Identity through Education and Culture, Heads of State and Government informally discussed education and training at the Gothenburg Social Summit, in November 2017. Moreover, on 17 January 2018, the European Commission adopted new measures to support key competences and digital skills, as well as the European dimension of Education.
This agenda was taken by the European Education Summit towards a European Education Area which will make mobility a reality for all, create a network of European Universities and promote lifelong learning.
